The Coffee Sourcing Hierarchy
Coffee labeling can be confusing.
"Single Origin" sounds premium, but it's actually the broadest category.
"Single Variety" is the most specific—and the most expensive.
Understanding these tiers helps you choose the right coffee for your business and budget.

For Vending Distributors: Single Origin or Single City. Cost-effective, consistent enough for machines, good margins.
For Quality Cafés: Single Estate or Single Variety. Premium positioning, customer loyalty, storytelling potential.
For Hotels & Chains: Single City or Single Estate. Balance between consistency, quality perception, and cost control.
For Specialty/Competition: Single Variety. Award-winning flavor, maximum differentiation, premium pricing justified.
The Real Question: Are You Choosing Based on Price—Or on What Your Customers Actually Need?
Most coffee buyers pick a tier based on budget alone. But the right choice depends on your business model, customer expectations, and growth goals. A vending distributor doesn't need Single Variety. A premium café doesn't benefit from Single Origin blends.
At Sunshine Superfoods, we help you choose the right tier for your business—and source it with precision. We work directly with farms at every level, ensuring you get genuine quality at your chosen tier, not commodity blends masquerading as premium.
